Dr. Else Marie Agger is project manager of Adjuvant Research in the Department of Infectious Disease Immunology, Statens Serum Institut (SSI). She has worked with pre-clinical assessment of subunit vaccines with a special emphasis on the adjuvant component and has extensive experience within a number of adjuvants, in particularly with adjuvants based on cationic liposomes being developed by SSI. Currently, she is involved in the coordination of a workpackage within an EU-funded project dealing with vaccine optimisation for a subunit vaccine against tuberculosis. In addition, as work-package leader within an EU-funded project focused on improved vaccination strategy against influenza she has experience with adjuvantation of influenza vaccines.

Dr KV Balasubramaniam, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals
Shri K V Balasubramaniam, Managing Director, Indian Immunologicals Ltd holds a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Madras University (1979) and a masters degree in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad ( 1981).
He has over 25 years experience in managing industrial enterprises, with nearly 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry. He joined Indian Immunologicals in 1996 as Chief executive and has been instrumental in reviving the fledgling unit of the National Dairy Development Board and making it a professionally managed, performance driven and result oriented vaccine player. He was inducted into the Board as Managing Director in 1999. Indian Immunologicals is today the No 1 animal vaccine player , the 4th largest animal health company and the 10th largest biotech company in India.
Shri Balasubramaniam’s key area of expertise has been in general management, starting new businesses, turn around management and project management.

Dr Noel Barrett, Vice President, Global R&D Vaccines, Baxter AG
Dr. Barrett is Vice-Presdent R&D, Vaccines in the Bioscience Division of Baxter Healthcare. He received his Ph.D. in Virology at Trinity College, Dublin in 1979 and subsequently held a post-doctoral fellowship for four years at the University of Würzburg in Germany. In 1983, he joined the Austrian company Immuno A.G. in Vienna which was subsequently acquired by Baxter Healthcare. He has held diverse positions of increasing responsibility within these companies and is presently responsible for overseeing the development of a range of viral and bacterial vaccines for human use.

Dr Jean-Yves Bonnefoy, Vice President of Research and Development, Transgene
Dr. Jean-Yves BONNEFOY was appointed Vice President, Research in February 2005 and Vice President, Research and Development in March 2006 in charge of Research, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs and Intellectual Property. Prior to joining Transgene, he was Head of the Canceropôle Lyon Rhônes-Alpes. From 1997 to 2002, he was Director of the Immunology Center of the Pierre Fabre Group in Saint-Julien en Genevois, France. He previously was responsible for the Immunology Department of the Biomedical Research Institute of the Glaxo-Wellcome Group in Geneva, Switzerland. Jean-Yves Bonnefoy holds a PhD in immunology from the Lyons Claude Bernard University and has completed the Senior Management Program of the London Business School.

Gautam is currently the European Business Manager at Hyclone and is responsible for supporting the Process Liquids business across Europe. He has more than 10 years experience working within the Biotech and Pharmaceutical industry. Gautam has worked on a number of projects with different vaccine manufacturers on enhancing down stream purification processes. Prior to joining HyClone, Gautam worked at Millipore.
Gautam holds a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from Leeds Business School.

Dr Ronald Ellis, Senior Vice President, Research and Development, AVANT Immunotherapeutics
Ronald W. Ellis joined AVANT Immunotherapeutics (Needham, MA, USA) in January 2006 as Senior Vice-President, Research & Development. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, followed by a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute. He spent the next 14 years at Merck Research Laboratories, where he became responsible for preclinical vaccine research and was cochairman of collaborations in developing pediatric combination vaccines with partner companies. He joined Astra Research Center Boston in 1996 and directed their vaccine program. He then joined BioChem Pharma in 1998 to set up a Boston-area vaccine development subsidiary, and continued as Senior Vice President Development through purchases by Shire Pharmaceuticals in 2001 and then by ID Biomedical in 2004.
He has championed or led R&D efforts on a wide range of viral and bacterial vaccines from discovery or in-licensure through early and advanced development as well as to product licensure and launch, including several vaccines now on the market or in Phase 3 studies. He is author or co-author of over 100 publications and 35 review articles that are mostly in the field of vaccines, and he is editor/coeditor of 7 books on vaccines and associated technologies. He has made ~100 invited presentations, has chaired many sessions at international scientific conferences and venues, and has made numerous presentations to regulatory agencies. He has served on various international committees for vaccine research and development. He is Editor-in-Chief of the new peer-reviewed journal Human Vaccines, which was launched in 2005.

Mr Michel Greco, Independent Vaccine Expert, Independant Vaccine Expert
Michel Greco has had a long and successful career in the industry, both in pharmaceuticals first, with the former Rhone-Poulenc Group, and in the vaccine area for the last 15 years. From 1988 to 1993, through successive mergers and acquisitions, he had senior management responsibilities at Institut Mérieux, then Pasteur Mérieux Connaught. From 1994 to 1998, he was President and CEO of Pasteur Mérieux MSD (a European joint venture between Pasteur Mérieux and Merck). Since 1998 and until the beginning of 2003, he was President and COO, then Deputy CEO and member of the Board of Aventis Pasteur. Michel Greco is presently member of the Board of a number of biotechnology companies and of non-profit international institutions.

Dr Nikolai Kirkby, Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder, Head of Laboratory, Virology, Department of Clinical Microbiology, Nordic Vaccine A/S, Copenhagen University Hospital
Nikolai Kirkby has a Master of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Copenhagen and a Ph.D. in Immunology and Vaccinologi from the same place. Nikolai Kirkby has worked on molecular characterisation of the Major Histocompatibility Complexes and receptor-ligand interactions. In prologulation of this work he has had two positions as research scientist in the pharma industry. In 1994 Nikolai Kirkby established the Department of Molecular Virology at the State Serum Institute in Denmark, which he was heading it until 1997. Then he joined a research team, headed by professor Kristian Dalsgaard, Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Copenhagen. In 2002 Nikolai Kirkby was appointed head of the laboratory for diagnosis of viral diseases at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Copenhagen University Hospital in Copenhagen. In addition, Nikolai Kirkby is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Nordic Vaccine A/S.

Dr Reiner Laus, Founding CEO and President, BN Immunotherapeutics
Dr. Laus is founding CEO and President of BN ImmunoTherapeutics, which was formed as a member of the Bavarian Nordic group in January, 2005. BN ImmunoTherapeutics focuses on the development of recombinant Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) for the immunotherapy of cancer. Prior to this, Dr. Laus held the position of Vice President of Research and Development at Dendreon Corporation, where he worked since 1993. Dendreon is a Seattle-based developer of cancer immunotherapies. Previously, Dr. Laus held research appointments at the University of Kiel, Germany and at Stanford University in California. Dr. Laus received his M.D. from the University of Kiel in 1986.

Mr Jacques-Francois Martin, President and CEO, Parteurop
Jacques-François Martin has spent the essence of his career in the pharmaceutical, biological and life sciences industries.
From 1970 until 1976, he was the Chief Executive Officer of Rhône-Poulenc Pharma in Hamburg, Germany. Martin then returned to France to join the Institut Mérieux as Vice President of sales and marketing, where he largely contributed to the international expansion of Mérieux. He was named the company’s Chief Executive Officer in 1988, and successfully negotiated with the government of Canada to acquire Connaught Laboratories.
In 1991, Martin set up Parteurop S.A, a biotech consulting company based in Lyon, France. At Parteurop, Martin as Chairman and CEO, helps establish start-up companies by leveraging innovation from French and foreign institutions.
From 1996 to 1998, Martin was the Chief Executive Officer of the Fondation Jean Dausset – Centre d’Etudes du Polymorphisme Humain, a private foundation dedicated to genomics research.
From September 1996 to September 1999, he was a member of the Board of INSERM (Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, the French National Institute of Health).
From 1994 to 1997, Martin served as the Chairman of the Biologicals Committee of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations. As such, he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Group of Experts of WHO (SAGE).
From November 1997 to June 2003 he was a member of the Board of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).
From 2000 to January 2005, Martin held the position of President of The Vaccine Fund. He lead the Fund’s efforts to provide lifesaving vaccines and other immunization program support to low-income countries. In this capacity, he was also a member of the Board of GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization).
He is member of the Board of several life sciences companies. Martin holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales.

Dr Ronald Neeleman, Manager Influenza Vaccine Development, Solvay Pharmaceuticals
Dr. R. Neeleman received his PhD in biotechnology at the Wageningen University (The Netherlands) in 2002. Before that he worked as a bioprocess engineer at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment in The Netherlands. After receiving his PhD, he stayed at the National Vaccine Institute in Bilthoven, The Netherlands (working at the development of vaccines against whooping cough and meningitis). Dr. R. Neeleman joined Solvay Pharmaceuticals in 2003 and became Manager of Influenza Vaccine Development in 2004.
Currently In his current position as Manager of Influenza Vaccine Development he is, amongst others, responsible for the animal cell technology and a whole range of programs, from virosomal vaccines and cell mediated immunity to alternative routes of administration and pandemic preparedness.
Publications Dr. R. Neeleman is author and co-author of a broad range of biopharmaceutical publications in peer reviewed scientific journals.

Tibor Nemes, Associate Director, Technical Operations, Novavax
Mr. Tibor Nemes is Associate Director of Technical Operations for Novavax, Inc. He has company-wide responsibility for engineering, validation and technology transfer. His key focus areas include advanced vaccine manufacturing as they pertain to scalable, disposable and portable manufacturing. His additional responsibilities include facilities planning and capital project oversight. Previously Mr. Nemes had responsibilities for Global Contract Manufacturing at ConvaTec, A Bristol-Myers Squibb Company where he provided technical oversight for new product manufacturing and existing product transfers to external manufacturers. Prior to ConvaTec, Mr. Nemes spent 4 years at Elan Pharmaceuticals in Princeton, New Jersey with increasing responsibility in sterile product process development, aseptic manufacturing and filling operations, and validation. Mr. Nemes’ career encompasses over 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.

Dr Hélène Pora is Vaccine Application Development director with Pall LIfe Sciences , where she has the worldwide responsibility for the development of improved separation and purification solutions for the vaccine and gene therapy market. She is also heavily involved in the development of improved single use technologies and related scale-up aspects. Hélène has more than 20 years of experience working for the pharmaceutical and the separation industries, the last 15 years with Pall Corporation. She holds an Engineering Degree in Biochemistry (with Molecular Biology) from the Institut National Agronomique (France) and a PhD in Biochemistry ( on protein engineering and purification) from the University of Orsay (France).
